HENRY WESSEL, JR. (American, b. 1942) UNTITLED dated and signed "1968 Henry Wessel, Jr." in pencil on verso vintage gelatin silver print 9 x 13 1/2 in. (22.9 x 34.3 cm) paper: 11 x 14 in. (27.9 x 35.6 cm) 1968 PROVENANCE From the artist to a Private Collection LITERATURE John Szarkowski, LOOKING AT PHOTOGRAPHS, New York, 1973, p. 213 (illustrated) When this photograph was made in 1968, the world was in turmoil. The United States was at war in Vietnam, Soviet tanks had invaded Prague, and massive strikes and demonstrations in Paris and the provinces overturned French society. Meanwhile, in the American southwest, Wessel observed a relatively minor event-the serene juxtaposition of a lone cloud and a telephone pole. It is a celebration of existence, an ode to the simple joy of being in that particular place at that particular moment. According to the artist, there were three prints made of this image before the negative was accidentally damaged: one is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the other in the collection of the artist.
