"Henry Wessel, Jr." APERTURE, vol. 19, no. 1 (1974), p. 17 (illustrated)
Henry Wessel, Jr.'s photograph of an apartment complex parking lot is characteristic of his work of the early 1970s. He was among eight photographers included in the important exhibition "New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape," at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York in 1975. This exhibition heralded a new approach to landscape photography, one depicting the struggle between nature and the man-made environment. An excellent example of this phenomenon, the present work contrasts extremely tall palm trees, barren apartment buildings, and a tangle of electric wires.
