[HENRY VIII]

271. [HENRY VIII]

(1491-1547). Second son of Henry VII and one of England’s most notorious monarchs, King of England from 1509. In his relentless quest to provide a suitable heir to the throne he married and disposed of six wives, two of them beheaded. Early DS with woodcut signature, 1p irregularly cut, 9"x8", Greenwich, Feb 14, [ca. 1509]. To Sir Edward Poynings, Comptroller of the Household and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The King cites the formal complaint made to him by William Dopson and Cornelius Laurence of “Delff” [Delft] in Holland, in a testimony under the town’s seal, that seven vats and eight barrels of herring were taken from them at sea by “the bark of Calais,” and were in the custody of the Mayor of “Feusham” [Faversham]. Poynings is commanded to cause the Mayor to make immediate restitution of the fish, delivering it to the bearer of the King’s letter so that the Delftmen can sell it without delay. The Mayor is required to wait on the King and Council to answer regarding the matter. Document is signed at top margin with his stamped woodcut signature, as rare as those are with his actual signature. Irregularly torn right edge; tipped to heavier stock; o/w VG. Henry’s reign was marked by the separation of the Church of England from Roman Catholicism and the establishment of royal supremacy lasting a hundred years until the establishment of the Commonwealth.
