Henry Moore met Dorothy Hodgkin in the 1960's at the Royal Society. For many years, he refused to do a conventional portrait of her and finally executed a series of drawings and prints of her hands. Moore frequently drew or studied hands, and is quoted as saying, "After the head and face, hands are the most expressive part of the human body."
Dorothy Hodgkin (1910-1994) was a British chemist. She helped and discovered many aspects of B12 vitamins and insuline on the body.
