In part, "...my first impulse was to accept your kind invitation to speak before the Lady Liberal Unionists with whom I am in such hearty sympathy but a moments's reflection convinced me of the impolicy of my speaking upon such a subject as a Nigerian Question, as it would simply irritate the French and cause them to seek to retaliate in Equatorial Africa in places equally dear to me. If any one else spoke of course it would not matter, but you can easily understand why one of the Founders of the Congo State should not attack France for her questionable acts in Nigeria...If however you should care for a short exposition of the South African question...I should gladly place myself at your service..."
