American expatriate writer known for psychologically complex and realistic fiction including <i>Washington Square</i> (1881) and <i>The Ambassadors</i> (1903). ALS, 3pp, 8vo, Philadelphia, Jan 10, 1905. On Rittenhouse Club stationery to Mr. Jayne thanking him for a check. James writes, “<i>I am extremely obliged to you for the courtesy of your note & for the cheque for $200.00...as fee for the address (according to our understanding) that I had the honour of making to the Contemporary Club last night. Kindly regard this as a receipt in full for the latter & as a very grateful acknowledgment of the kindness & cordiality that I have met in Philadelphia</i>...” Boldly penned and signed in full. Occasional ink feathering; o/w VG. <b>Henry LaBarre Jayne</b> was a prominent Philadelphian who organized for a time a long-running series of lectures. James’ lecture herein referenced was entitled “The Lesson of Balzac.” Agnes Repplier introduced the author to an audience of five or six hundred people. His engagement is further referenced in <i>Henry James Letters,</i> Vol. IV, p 336-7.
