: .48 Caliber, 3 3/8" round, flat-top barrel with a dark, pitted bore. This is a round triggerguard style pistol that has an overall darkly mottled gray and plum-brown patina on the barrel with patches of moderate pitting along its length, heavier around the nipple. "DERINGER/PHI(LADELA)" is still legible at the top flat of the breech with "(sunburst) P" on the left and the back action lockplate has a matching gray-brown patina with still discernible floral engraving and "DERINGER/PHILADELA" maker's mark while the hammer has light pitting throughout, heavier on and around the nose. The dark walnut stock has lovely German silver fittings: nosecap, barrel wedge escutcheons, contoured plate under the bolster, shield-shaped plaque on the wrist, scalloped sideplate, teardrop-shaped flourish at the butt, and triggerguard with the distinctive "cornstalk" finial used by Deringer between 1835-1845. The wood is in very good shape with flattened but still visible checkering and numerous small handling marks, heaviest on the butt, under a thick added varnish finish. Additionally, there is a small chip and crack just above the wedge escutcheon on the right side and a short with-the-grain crack running back from the breech to the lock screw bolster. An old but non-original wooden ramrod is included and the mechanism is still tight and fully functional. This is a very good example of a medium size Deringer pistol and would make a splendid addition to any collection. MWF694
