WWI Recruiting Poster (28" x 41")
Fine+ on Linen; Artwork by Herbert Andrew Paus
American Lithographic Co., 1918

In this particular poster, artist Herbert Paus skillfully combines visual elements and concise text to convey the dual message of enlistment and ammunition production. Paus was one of the most prolific American poster artists of the war. In addition to creating numerous notable posters for government agencies and charitable organizations, he illustrated covers for national magazines and served on the Executive Committee of Artists for the Division of Pictorial Publicity, the government body responsible for issuing posters. Prior to linen-backing, the poster had paper loss, tears and chips in the borders with several large tears in the upper area and into the upper left corner, all of which were addressed by professional restoration with some airbrushing in the borders. This vintage recruitment poster presents beautifully and features a great Naval-themed image.

When America declared war in April 1917, it faced a significant shortage of both manpower and material necessary for combat. In response, the government swiftly launched a vigorous recruitment drive, with the US Navy becoming the first American government agency to produce wartime posters.
