Klaus Honnef, HELMUT NEWTON: PORTRAITS, Munich, Schirmer/Mosel, 1990, pl. 174 (illustrated)
The monocle is a recurring motif in Newton's work. As with so many ingredients within his images, it has its source in his memories of pre-war Berlin. As a teenager eager to become a working photographer, Newton served an apprenticeship with the Berlin fashion photographer Yva. In her darkroom, he worked alongside and was strongly attracted to a young woman who wore a monocle. His adolescent imagination was fired by this vision that he has carried with him through the years and reconstructed on several occasions. The photograph also recalls Otto Dix's celebrated 1926 portrait of female journalist, Sylvia von Harden.
