HELMET, GOGGLES AND LOG OF SUBMARINE-KILLER R.C.A.F.
HELMET, GOGGLES AND LOG OF SUBMARINE-KILLER R.C.A.F. PILOT D. L. HOBSON
Grouping includes flight log, helmet and goggles of an R.C.A.F. Pilot Officer D. L Hobson, later credited with the sinking of a U-boat. Group includes early leather training helmet with padded chin strap and ear openings, size 7 1/8, and goggles with elastic strap, now quite deformed. Hobson's April, 1940 to March, 1942 flight log as a pilot observer/instructor is also present, signed several times within and showing about sixty hours of flight time in 27 sorties. Several of the flights were anti-submarine warfare patrols, and Hobson also mentions a "Search off Nantucket" and Convoy HX-69. Very good. Hobson served in the RAF in World War I, stayed in after the war and rose to the rank of squadron leader, then served in the R.C.A.F in early World War II but finally transferred into the U.S.A.A.F. as a lieutenant colonel when the U.S. entered the fray. Provenance: TIME-LIFE Collection; The War Museum.
