(1895 - 1970) German admiral and Knights Cross recipient. Heye commanded the ADMIRAL HIPPER and sank the British destroyer GLOWWORM during the invasion of Norway. His message to the British Admiralty praising the gallantry of the vessel's commander contributed to Lt. Cdr. Gerard Roope receiving (posthumously) the first Victoria Cross of World War II. He later commanded German naval forces in the Black Sea. Fine association I.S.P., 15 3/4" x 19 1/2" b/w, a professional chest, up pose in uniform inscribed: "Hellmuth Heye to Fritz Frauenheim with eternal loyalty and gratefulness 9.III.45". Sold with an unsigned 15 3/4" x 19 1/2" photo of Frauenlein in uniform. Both are signed by the photographer and very good. U-boat captain FRITZ FRAUENLEIN (1912-1969) sank a total of 19 vessels of 78,853 GRT total from September 1939 until his retirement from front line service in December 1940. He was awarded the Knights Cross for his service. Frauenlein would also command the 23rd and 29th U-boat flotillas in the Mediterranean.
