Helen Levitt’s only major body of work done outside of New York City was created in the Spring and Summer of 1941 in Mexico City. Levitt traveled there with her friend Alma Agee, who, with her son, was taking a hiatus from her difficult marriage to author James Agee. Despite a certain sense of timelessness in these pictures, the taut compositions convey the tensions of the escalating war in Europe.
