HARRY CALLAHAN (American, 1912-1999) DETROIT vintage gelatin silver print 3 x 43/8 in. (7.6 x 11.1 cm) 1943 ESTIMATE: $8,000-12,000 LITERATURE John Pultz, "Harry Callahan: Early Street Photography, 1943-1945," THE ARCHIVE, no. 28, 1990, pp. 4-44 From 1943 to 1945, Harry Callahan worked on a series of photographs of women shopping in downtown Detroit. Opposed to the prevalent belief that displays of intense emotion make great photographs, he sought a more subtle approach. About this series he said, "I don't like pictures showing great emotion-people sobbing, deep in thought, and all that kind of stuff. So I wanted them when they weren't doing any of that stuff, I wanted them lost in their own thoughts as they walked down the street" (Pultz, "Harry Callahan: Early Street Photography, 1943-1945," THE ARCHIVE, no. 28, 1990, p. 36).
