"When looking at the photographs of Harry Callahan one must replace a first impression, accurate enough, of the narrowness of their visual world with an impression, steadily deepened by further study, of a genuine world of vision. To have a camera - it is a memorable experience of childhood - is to be suddenly excited by the wealth of things to see, and by seeing them. Yet with all the world before him Callahan has searched out only his things the things that express, he has said, my 'feelings and visual relationships to the life within me and about me.' He does not use the camera as a visual instrument that teaches us to see without its aid; that is the profound socio-aesthetic intent of the documentary art of a Dorothea Lange. He prefers to use it to see the things of the self, for the things he sees are images of the self-and-world. 'I am interested, he wrote in an early statement of purpose, "in relating the problems that affect me, to some set of values that I am trying to discover and establish as being my life. I want to discover and establish them through photography.'" (Sherman Paul, HARRY CALLAHAN, New York, Museum of Modern Art, 1967, p. 6). !![Text above relates to all Harry Callahan lots through Lot 38]!!
