HARROW, WILLIAM
(1822 - 1872) Union brigadier general who commanded at Antietam and Gettysburg. A great war-date A.L.S. adding rank on ""Headquarters Second Division 2d Army Corp"" letterhead, 1p. 4to., [n. p.], Sept. 6, 1863, to Gen. Seth Williams, in part: ""àI respectfully ask to be relieved from duty with the armyàI have not served with any other Corps. It would be very important compliant to me, to form newàacquaintances. I scarcely know an individual connected with the army outside of this Corps. The officer now commanding this Corps will doubtless give his approvalà"". An interesting subject since Harrow had already resigned once before in the summer of 1862, to be reappointed in time for the battle of Antietam. Harrow served at Gettysburg and helped to repulse Pickett's charge. After the battle, he was relieved of division command and again resigned only to have Lincoln revoke it. Very good.
