HARRISON, WILLIAM HENRY
(1773 - 1841) Ninth President of the United States, military hero at Tippecanoe Creek and against Tecumseh, died after one month in office. Rare A.L.S. as Governor of Indiana and Commander of the Indiana Militia, 1p. oblong 8vo., Cincinnati, July 9, 1812, to Major Martin, U.S. Arsenal, New Port, ordering supplies for the Militia. In part: ""...I will thank you to have three hundred & twenty muskets bayonets & Cartooch boxed prepared this morning for the Indiana Militia. The waggons will be in this place for them in an hour or two...also...request Capt. Adams or Lieut. Bryson to have them put over the River..."". Despite his victory on November 11, 1811 at the Battle of Tippencanoe, Harrison had been passed over for promotion at the outbreak of the War of 1812, and William Hull appointed brigadier general to lead the American attack from Detroit to Canada. On July 12, just three days after this letter, Hull invaded Upper Canada at Sandwich, across from Detroit, only to be outmaneuvered and defeated by the British. He would surrender on Aug. 16. As a result of this, Harrison received his appointment as supreme commander of the Army of the Northwest on Sept. 17, 1812. Margins a bit rough, and slight smudging to signature, otherwise boldly written and very good. A scarce example from this period.
