(1765 - 1848) American politician, Mayor of Boston and U.S. Senator who led the Hartford Convention. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to. Boston, Jan. 7, 1818 to William H. Summer (1780 - 1861), then a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives: "After the conversation which took place between us in Court, Isaac W Mason, who thinks after the evidence he has obtained, there is no colour for the prosecution of the suit bro[ugh]t against us, and he understood you talk of the same opinion - He appears also to be perfectly satisfied that the only effect of a trial will be to stir up other claims against which it would be less easy to defend .... that a compromise will give us no security against such an event..." Chipping to right and left margins affecting several words of text, usual folds, light toning, else very good overall.
