HARDING, WARREN G.
777. WARREN G. HARDING (1865 - 1923) Twenty-ninth President of the United States. An interesting association piece, D.S. as President-elect, a dinner menu from the S.S. Pastores from Dec. 3, 1920, measuring approx. 13" x 10" bearing a engraving of Harding in a montage featuring the U.S. Capitol and the ship which belonged to the United Fruit Company Steamship Service. Harding signs and inscribes the menu "With agreeable memories of happy voyages Sincerely Warren G. Harding" Underneath his wife FLORENCE KLING HARDING signs as well. The United Fruit Company was already a very powerful force and arguably a major influence in American foreign policy in Central America for much of the last century. In that year alone, the U.S. sent troops into Guatemala to disrupt union organizers. The U.S. would continue to send troops into various Central American nations when the interests of United Fruit were threatened. No doubt the company wished to curry favor with the incoming administration with this little dinner in Harding's honor. Cover is moderately soiled, but is still quite attractive and presentable, center vertical fold partially separated, otherwise very good condition.$200-300
