HANDY, WILLIAM C.
(1873-1958) American musician and composer considered ""Father of the Blues"", composer of ""Memphis Blues"" and ""St. Louis Blues"". Very fine content T.L.S. ""W. C. Handy"" on his Handy Brother Music Co., 2pp. 4to., New York, May 22, 1951, to Edgard Smith, in part: ""...It was my good fortune to spend a day in Washington making an appearance for the National Association for the Blind through which the 'W. C. Handy Foundation for the Blind' was incorporated...To give you an idea of the Practical work of the W. C. Handy Foundation...may I say that through the broadcast over Big Joe' Happiness Exchange, we have already enough to buy five Braille Dictionaries at eighty-six dollars each...I was in Washington when the battle began over the MacArthur incidence. I had a chance to do my march song for 'The Big Stick Blues' inspired by the Big Stick policy of Theodore Roosevelt which we seem to have forgotten...since this song was sent to General MacArthur and other Notables like Ex-President Herbert Hoover, Congressman, Governors, Senators, and four hundred Mayors...you may be hearing it over radio and elsewhere...In publishing this song it was my hope that it would unify Americans despite partisan politics, and in this way, I would be making a patriotic contribution...Recently I attended the Negro Actor's Guild dance and met many old friends in the profession...On the 10th of April...men in all walks of life gave a dinner in my honor, the W. C. Handy night. Many celebrities of both Races sang and played and did their individual stunts to the edification of all. Billy Banks sang by 'The Big Stick Blues' and 'Shine like Mornin' Star'...Adele Brown sang our song 'I See Tho My Eyes Are Closed...I met many outstanding personalities and made a 'pep' talk out of my adversities in life that turned into blessings...The foregoing gives you an idea of my activities at 77 and blind..."". Two small marginal chips, otherwise boldly signed and very good.
