Antique American handmade, handstitched quilt Rose of Sharon. Believed to date to 1820's.

Measures 72X72inches.

Very early cotton quilt. Largely white ground with pink, red and green floral buds and leaves radiating from a bullseye patterned center. We are not quilt experts, but the 95 year old lady from whose collection this quilt was bought said that the pattern is called "Rosa Sheraton", which was later corrected to Rose of SHaron, and that it was at leat 180 years old.

The white ground is even more fascinating than the coloured pattern. Done in very tight stitching, with a running feather vine pattern. we found a description of this kind of Whitework in the book America's Glorious Quilts by Dennis Duke and Deborah Harding:...The designs were achieved entirely by intricate patterns of quilting stitches. These masterpieces were attempted only by the most proficient needleworkers, who combined superior stitching with an ability to plan an often exquisitely detailed composition. By making very small stitches and placing them close together, they caused the unstitched areas to puff up to become the design elements surrounded by outline or stipple quilting. .....

Overall condition is very good. Some of the pink rings have moth holes: one quite bad ring, a few quite minor. THe worst example is clearly shown in the 'photos. THe majority are absolutely fine, as is the rest of the quilt. (why were those pink rings so tasty?).
