HANDKERCHIEF WITH INITIALS “MVR” REMOVED FROM VON
HANDKERCHIEF WITH INITIALS “MVR” REMOVED FROM VON RICHTHOFEN’S BODY AFTER THE FOKKER TRI-PLANE CRASH. TWO PERTINENT LETTERS INCLUDED. This embroidered handkerchief is one of the most personal of all effects offered today. It has been stated in the past that a close relative of Richthofen did the actual embroidery, but we have not been able to verify that fact. This handkerchief was removed, along with other effects, from the Baron’s body by Lt. Donald L. Fraser’s 11th Brigade Intelligence Office immediately after the tri-plane crash. Lt. Fraser sent Von Richthofen’s handkerchief and scarf with a notification of authenticity to Charles Donald, who, in the early 1960s, passed these items on to Carisella. Donald’s certificate of authenticity accompanies this handkerchief. In Carisella’s archives, a letter from Major General L. E. Beavis asserts that a Lt. Elbs first found both the handkerchief and the scarf, turning both over to the Intelligence Officer. The handkerchief is a linen-type material with a woven border of four lines. In the left corner, the initials “MvR” are neatly cross-stitched in red silk-type thread. This handkerchief, one of the most important personal relics of the famous “Red Baron” in existence today, is impeccably provenanced. CONDITION: Fine. Showing some age staining. SIZE: 19-1/2” x 19”. From the Collection of the late P. J. Carisella. 4-53521 (40,000-60,000)
