HAND-CARRIED TORCH USED IN TORCHLIGHT PARADES
An antique torch carried by a political supporter in a torchlight parade, ca. 1850-1880, symbolic of the political fervor of the era. The torch bears a cylindrical tin barrel at one end, 6" diameter, 4" tall, with three metal-sheathed cylinders which still contain cotton wicks within. A 26 1/2" wood shaft is attached to the drum and terminates in a wedge-shaped end which rested upon the carrier's waist. Obviously much used, the torch drum is oxidized but tight, and the handle is scorched at its "business" end and well-worn elsewhere. A great American political relic, perhaps even dating to Lincoln's elections.
