HANCOCK, JOHN
(1737 - 1793) American Revolutionary politician and first signer of the Declaration of Independence, President of the Continental Congress and two-time Governor of Massachusetts. Fine content war-date A.L.S. ""J.H."" 1p. oblong small 4to., Boston, Feb. 7, 1783 to the ""Gentleman of the Senate & Gentleman of the House of Representatives"", reporting that he had received ""...a Letter form Colonel Lithgow, by The Indians of the Penobscot Tribe, these Indians are come to make Application for Sundry Articles for the use of the Tribe. The Letter with the Commissions given one of these Indians by Brigr. Genl. Lovell, I have directed the Secretary [to] lay before you - I have given orders that these Indians should [be] taken Care of this Night & have become Responsible for [their] expenses. I...recommend these Papers & the Case of these Indians to your Consideration..."". Hancock adds a short docket on the verso: ""[Mess]age to Gen. Court Febry. 7, 1783"". The Penobscot had allied themselves with the revolution in 1775, thus Hancock's seeming urgency in fulfilling their requests. Left margin ragged and chipped resulting in the loss of a few words, otherwise very good.
