HANCOCK, JOHN
(1737 - 1793) American Revolutionary politician and first signer of the Declaration of Independence, President of the Continantal Congress and two-time Governor of Massachusetts. Excellent partly-printed war-date D.S. "John Hancock" as President of Congress, 1p. sm. folio, [Philadelphia], May 10, 1777, an appointment of Samuel Chace to serve as "…Ensign of a Company in the regiment commanded by Henry Jackson…in the Army of the United States, raised for the Defence of American Liberty, and for repelling every hostile Invasion thereof…" Co-signed by CHARLES THOMSON (1729-1824), the Irish born first Secretary of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1789, who was also chosen to notify Washington of his election to the Presidency. This document bears one of the boldest, finest Hancock signatures we've seen! Folds, with margins just slightly worn and a pinhole in top line of text, else very good to fine condition and well-suited for framing.
