HAHN REWELD SEMIAUTOMATIC PORTUGESE AR10 RIFLE.

Cal.7.62 NATO. S# 55. Bbl. 21.5" Mfg. 1970's. The most popular modern sporting rifle in the United States is absolutely the AR-15. The Granddaddy of this rifle is the AR-10, chambered in 7.62 NATO & designed in the mid 1950's. It was adopted by several military units, outside the United States including Sudan, Portugal & even Cuba. ArmaLite licensed manufacturing rights to a Dutch manufacturer called Artillerie-Inrichtingen (A.I.) in 1957 where they were primarily manufactured in the early 1960s. Despite substantial sales to the governments of Sudan & Portugal, logistical problems would soon cause manufacture to cease & the focus would come back to the United States in the development of the successor, the AR-15. This particular example is a Portuguese model, originally manufactured as a Machine gun, like the majority of them were. It was imported back into the USA where it was destroyed by being disassembled & cut up. It was rebuilt as a semiautomatic rifle, rewelded & refinished by Boyd Hahn of Hahn Machine Company in St. Charles, Missouri. Dark black finish on all exposed metal surfaces aside from parkerized barrel. Barrel is terminated w/ 3 slot flash hider forward of top mounted bayonet lug. Tall, protected blade front sight coincides w/ adjustable peep sight mounted inside carry handle. Charging handle resides between carry handle & receiver, directly above the dust cover. Brown synthetic furniture. Round front handguard & pistol grip more resemble Bakelite while the shoulder stock presents a smoother surface. Hard rubber recoil pad. No forward assist or brass deflector behind spring assisted dust cover. Slab side lower receiver marked on mag well, right side; "Patents pending / ArmaLite / AR 10 / 55 / mfd by Nederland" w/ triangular AI logo. Safety selector marked; "Fire - Safe" in proper positions. Right side receiver markings include "007823" above pistol grip, below selector. Upper receiver marked on left side, above mag well; "Cal. 7.62mm, NATO - 006885". Sling swivels, front & rear on left side. MAGS: 1 Waffle pattern 20 rd. marked "ArmaLite Patents Pending" on floorplate. CONDITION: Finish coverage is complete & consistent as refinished in the 1970s. Typical of the Hahn rebuilt AR-10 examples, there are very few signs of the re-weld process, though not completely invisible. Furniture presents typical impressions w/ no outward sign of damage of any kind. Original factory markings on lower receiver are quite light from refinishing, having lost detail. Bore examination reveals extensive fine pitting & worn lands the entire barrel length. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand though charging handle binds at times at full closure. (23-847/JZ). MODERN. $8,000-12,000.
