<B>Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,</B></I><B><I> The Song of Hiawatha</B></I></B></I> (London: David Bogue, 1855), first edition, 316 pages, marbled endpapers and edges, brown-calf binding with gilt lettering and decorations, 16mo (6.5" x 4.25"), mylar dust jacket. This is the rare first edition of Longfellow's epic poem about the Ojibway Indians, which preceded the U.S. edition (Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1855) by a mere 10 days. The inside front cover includes the bookplate of Sir Charles A. Hanbury, a British M.P. who was raised to the Peerage as Baron Sudely of Toddington in 1838.
