'Torvanger' was built by Doxford's of Sunderland for Westfal-Larsen & Co. of Bergen in 1920. Registered at 6,568 tons gross, she measured 420 feet in length with a 54 foot beam and could steam at 10 1/2 knots. After twenty years service, she was taken into allied hands when Norway was invaded and occupied in 1940, but was torpedoed and sunk by U.84 whilst on passage from New York and Halifax (Nova Scotia) to Alexandria on 23rd June 1942.
