Smith of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and was connected to the National Amateur Press Association. Smith was a friend and correspondent of H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and other famous amateur press fanatics. Tryout was the first outlet for many of Lovecraft's short stories, namely "The Cats of Ulthar" (November 1920), "The Terrible Old Man" (July 1921), "The Tree" (October 1921), and "In the Vault" (November 1925). In fact, Smith provided the plot idea for "In the Vault". Tryout also published a number of non-fiction articles and several poems by Lovecraft. The publication was noted for its typographical errors, which Lovecraft referred to as "tryoutisms". Additionally, Lovecraft published a number of pieces under various pseudonyms, such as Lewis Theobald, Jr., Edward Softly, Ames Dorrance Rowley, Ward Phillips, Lawrence Appleton, and Alexander Ferguson Blair, and Henry Paget-Lowe, among others.

Lovecraft published many poems, articles, and short pieces in The Tryout between 1915 and 1919. Those written as H. P. Lovecraft include "The Power of Wine" (April 1916); "Brumalia" (December 1916) as H. P. Lovecroft [sic]; "Fact and Fancy" (February 1917); "Prologue" to "Fragments from an Hour of Inspiration" (July 1917); "Ad Britannos" (April 1918); "Revelation" (March 1919); "Spring" (April 1919); and "To Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, Eighteenth Baron Dunsany" (November 1919).

Articles by Lovecraft writing under various pseudonyms can also be found in this collection. They are: "The Nymph's Reply to the Modern Business Man" (February 1917) as Lewis Theobald, Jr.; "Pacifist War Song - 1917" (March 1917) as Lewis Theobald, Jr.; "To Maj. Gen. Omar Bundy, U.S.A." (January 1919) as Ames Dorrance Rowley; "In Memoriam J. E. T. D." (March 1919) as Ward Phillips; "The Last Pagan Speaks" (April 1919) as Ames Dorrance Rowley; "To Selene" (April 1919) as Edward Softly; "Hylas and Myrrha. A Tale." (May 1919) as Lawrence Appleton; "North and South Britons" (May 1919) as Alexander Ferguson Blair; "Myrrha and Strephon" (July 1919) as Lawrence Appleton; "A Cycle of Verse" (July 1919) as Ward Phillips; "Monody on the Late King Alcohol" (August 1919) as Lewis Theobald, Jun.; and "Bells" (December 1919) as Ward Phillips.

Also, a tribute to Lovecraft can be found in the March 1917 issue, written by Chester Prince Munroe, and Lovecraft is mentioned in several articles throughout the collection.

Overall, the issues are in very good condition, and an absolute must for any Lovecraft completist, or anyone interested in the amateur press craze of the early 20th century.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
