H. P Lovecraft Signed Document being a partly printed Application for Membership in the United Amateur Press Association. One page, 6.5" x 6.25", no place, no date, signed on the "Recommended By" line. This looks like a fairly simple document signed by a legendary author, but upon closer examination, it has an association to Lovecraft that is incredibly important. Taking a look at his early life, we discover that he was a child prodigy, reciting poetry at age two and writing it by age six, but he was frequently ill. Lovecraft never actually graduated from high school because (most likely) of a nervous breakdown in 1908. When he withdrew from high school, he also withdrew from the world- destroying most of his early poetry and writings and becoming a young hermit, disappointed that he would never be able to attend Brown University, as was his goal. In 1914, he was invited to join the United Amateur Press Association and did so. The UAPA was a group of amateur writers who wrote and published their own journals. Lovecraft's published paper was called The Conservative, and he contributed to other journals as well, also editing the official club organ, The United Amateur. He later said of this organization "...In 1914, when the kindly hand of amateurdom was first extended to me, I was as close to the state of vegetation as any animal well can be... With the advent of the United I obtained a renewed will to live; a renewed sense of existence...I could feel that my efforts were not wholly futile..."
