H.M.S. RINGTAIL SERVING TRAY
H.M.S. RINGTAIL SERVING TRAY
Theater-made aluminum officers' mess serving tray from the R.N.A.S. Burscough, also known as H.M.S. Ringtail, a Fleet Air Arm (FAA) naval air station which was south-west of Burscough, Lancashire. The tray 23 1/2" x 16 1/2", has been carefully constructed with the base name and anchors in cut aluminum affixed to the upper face which itself has been burnished with small decorative swirls. The two carrying handles of the tray each bear anchor and crown motifs attached thereto. A sturdy piece with dovetail and peg joints used in its assembly. In December, 1942 the Admiralty acquired 650 acres and an airfield was built with four narrow runways and several hangars, commissioned on 1 September 1943. It was used to train for landing aircraft on aircraft carriers. The HMS Ringtail name was as for a ship because it was a Navy airfield, rather than an RAF one. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
