"H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA"
Original contemporary oil on canvas depicting the H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA in heavy seas with a destroyer astern of her, 32" x 20 1/4" and set into a gilt wood frame. Ink notation on the reverse of the canvas sets forth the identity of the vessel and adds: "After Charles Dixon R.A." Fine condition. The vessel served as flagship of the ANZAC Squadron in early 1942. As part of this force, she operated in support of U.S. naval and amphibious operations including the battles at the Coral Sea and Savo Island, landings at Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf, and numerous actions during the New Guinea campaign. She was forced to withdraw following a series of kamikaze attacks during the invasion of Lingayen Gulf. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
