TLS, one page, 8.5 x 5.5, personal letterhead, October 6, no year. Letter to Mr. Carney, in full: “Thanks very much for the Academy, with the article on Poe and Baltimore. Since it was written a monument to Poe has been built here. It includes a statue of him, showing him drunk! And his grave has been rehabilitated and made accessible. Every year thousands of visitors go to the old churchyard and gape at it. Even the adjacent church has been cleaned up, and reopened as a slaughter-house for incubi and succubi. The Presidential campaign this year is of extraordinary ferocity. The Republicans have raised the religious issue against Smith, who is a Catholic, and will probably elect Hoover on it. But there is still a faint hope for Smith, and I have given a colored clergyman $2 to pray for him. The Communists are completely invisible. The great majority of American workingmen, as usual, will vote Republican. Poor Sterling! I was in San Francisco two years ago when he killed himself. It was dreadful business.” Affixed to a slightly larger heavy cardstock sheet. In fine condition.
