<B>Herbert Hoover: Signed First Edition of <I>Principles of Mining</B></I>.</B></I> (New York and London: McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., 1909), first edition, thirteenth impression, 199 pages, crimson cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine, 8vo (6.25" x 9.25"), clear Mylar dust sleeve. Housed in a custom red quarter leather slipcase with marbled boards, gilt spine titles, and five raised leather spine bands. Inscribed and signed "<I>To Professor Robert W. Karpinski With the Kind Regards of Herbert Hoover</B></I>" on the front free endpaper. Laid-in is a January 13, 1965 response card from Herbert Hoover, Jr. and Allan Hoover, thanking Professor Karpinski for his "sympathy", likely for his condolences at the death of their father, who had passed away the previous fall. Professor Karpinski was a professor of Geology at the University of Illinois at Chicago during the 1960s, a subject near and dear to Hoover's heart.
