H.G. Wells. First Edition of The Time Machine
H.G. Wells. The Time Machine, An Invention. London: William Heinemann, [1895].

First edition. Twelvemo. 152 pages.

Unusual rebound paper-covered boards copy from the first publication run. Initially, 10,000 sets of sheets were printed, of which 6,000 copies were bound in paper wrappers, this being one. Due to the greater popularity of the hard-bound issue, unsold wrapped copies were stripped and bound in cloth by the publisher. Evidently, this copy was purchased with paper wrappers and later rebound by the purchaser, as it does not conform to the various known formats of the book.

Bound in red buckram with gilt lettering at spine; two discolored spots on recto board, with rubbing along board edges and spine ends. Board corners are surprisingly sharp and firm, showing minimal wear. Original paper wrappers and endpapers are significantly age toned and worn, although the bulk of the textblock is quite nice, showing little more than minor age toning. A wonderful copy of one of the greatest science fiction works ever written. Unique and desirable! From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
