U.S. Model 1814 Flintlock Rifle, by H. Deringer, Phila., PA, .54 cal., 33-1/2'' barrel, lock marked ''H. Deringer/Philada'', with similar markings to top of barrel just forward of frizzen, and named to individual soldier just forward of rear sight, ''G. Hay 1R, 1st B 4th D''. George Hay was a member of the 8th Co., 5th Battalion, Phila. Militia, 1785. He was later commissioned to 2nd Lieut. in the 2nd Co. 1st Rg. of the York County Militia in 1794. He became a Colonel of the 94th Reg. of PA Militia in Oct. 1814. His son, Geo. Hay Jr., became a Colonel of the 87th PA Vol. Infantry during the Civil War. Condition is about fine. Barrel has darkened over time. Stock with light scuffs and scratches and oil darkening near barrel bands and sideplate. Good functioning action. Sling and ramrod are present. Est.: $3,000-$5,000.
