Gyrth Russell (Canadian, 1892-1970) BALLINABOY, CONNEMARA signed lower right; titled on reverse oil on canvas 33 by 76cm., 13 by 30in. Although Russell painted numerous works in England, views of Ireland are unusual; this work seems to be the result of a brief painting holiday in the west. The author of several painting manuals including An Introduction to Oil Painting (Windsor & Newton, 1959) and See and Paint, he also wrote and illustrated a travel book Unknown Devon, for the Bodley Head press, 1927.
