Estimate: $3250 - 4500
Manufactured by Edward Gwyn and Abner Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio with a total production of 4,000. The breech end of the barrel is octagon and is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 600 yards. Sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver. The rear lock plate screw enters from the left side of the stock wrist. The hammer is flat with beveled edges and the lever is the shorter Type II pattern with the vertically mounted claw-like latch. The receiver, rear sight base, hammer, and lever had a casehardened finish, all other metal parts were finished in blue. The lock plate is marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL" in an arch over "PATENT / 1862 / HAMILTON. O." behind the hammer, "W" at the rear of the lock and "UNION / RIFLE" is marked vertically on the front, right side of the receiver. The left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver is stamped with the letter "R" and the lower left with a "P". The matching serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel, frame, lever and breechblock. For some unknown reason, the numbers have been restruck over, thus making number "3074" into "80714". Mounted with a walnut stock with a casehardened carbine buttplate and boxed "WHR" cartouche on the left wrist.
BBL: 20 inch part octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 3074/80714
Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 90% original blue finish with some muzzle wear and thinning to a smooth plum patina on the rear flats. The receiver, hammer and upper tang retain 60% original case colors, the buttplate retains 50% with some minor spotting and the lever has a smooth mottled silver gray patina with some original case colors in protected areas. The stock has been oiled at some time and remains excellent with only a few scattered minor dings and dents. A portion of the lock marking is beginning to fade, otherwise the markings are clear. Mechanically fine. A very nice Type II Gwyn & Campbell Civil War carbine.
