This is a Type II Gwyn & Campbell "Union Carbine" manufactured by Edward Gwyn and Abner Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio, with a total production of 4,000. The breech end of the barrel is octagon and is fitted with a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 600 yards. Sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver. The rear lock plate screw enters from the left side of the stock wrist. The hammer is flat with beveled edges and the lever is the shorter Type II pattern with the vertically mounted claw-like latch. The lock plate is marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL" in an arch over "PATENT / 1862 / HAMILTON. O." behind the hammer and "UNION RIFLE" ahead of the frame. The serial number is stamped on the frame, barrel, lever and breechblock. The stock is black walnut with an oil finish and has a script "WHR" cartouche on the left side of the wrist.

Condition: Good. The barrel has a mottled gray patina with evidence of being cleaned some time ago and some protective coating remaining. The frame, hammer, and lever have a mottled gray patina with traces of silvered out original case colors remaining. The buttplate has a smooth brown patina. There is some very scattered minor spotting and some minor pitting, with some deep pitting on the buttplate. The stock is excellent with a few minor handling marks and a couple missing small chips near the stock toe.
