American writer. She was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1985. Three TLSs, one signed in full, the other two signed “Gwen Brooks,” one from 1961 and two from 1967, ranging in size from 5 x 4 up to 8.5 x 11. One letter from 1967 reads, in part: “I am permitted to review Memmi’s important new book. The day Van called me, I had just typed out a note to Carey McWilliams of The Nation, expressing the hope I could ‘talk about’ the trio. He had asked me to write some articles for the magazine last spring, and I had failed him.” In fine condition, with light toning and wrinkling to one letter. RRAuction COA.
