Assistant secretary of the Navy during the Civil War (1821–1883). Civil War–dated ALS signed “G. V. Fox,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.5 x 10, United States Military Telegraph letterhead, May 30, 1863. Draft for a telegram to Samuel Wetmore. In part: “I telegraphed last evening, The Pres[iden]t tells me he has not received Genl. Anderson’s letter nor has he received any intimation of the contents until I told him—There is some mistake in the matter which all regret and which will be attended to at once.” Letter also bears various period office notations. Small edge separations to folds and slight mirroring to ink, otherwise fine condition. It is possible that the matter referenced was General Robert Anderson’s failing health, which led him to retire in October 1863.
