This factory engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Model Revolver was manufactured in 1853. The revolver has a five-shot cylinder, silver-plated brass trigger guard and back strap and one-piece ivory grip. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY}" in two lines. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in an engraved oval on the left side of the frame. The full serial number: "77686" is located on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The loading lever and the cylinder pin are stamped with the partial serial number: "7886". The barrel wedge is numbered "64377". The revolver is decorated with flawlessly executed Germanic scrollwork on a background of fine vertical lines. The engraving on the right sight of the barrel lug features the stylized bird's head that is typical of work executed by Gustave Young. The left side of the barrel lug features an oval panel with a reclining doe in a forest setting. The sides of the hammer are decorated with Gustave Young's characteristic wolf head motif. The trigger guard is engraved with a United States Shield surrounded by scrollwork. The engraving covers all of the frame, hammer and back strap and approximately 50% of the barrel and trigger guard. The engraving on the wedge matches the barrel engraving perfectly.
BBL: 5 inch octagonal
Stock:
Gauge: 31 percussion
Finish: blue
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 77686
Condition: Fine. The barrel retains at least 20% of the original blue finish and considerable case colors are present on protected areas of the frame. 70% of the original silver-plated finish remains on the trigger guard and back strap. The cylinder retains about 80% of the roll-engraved Stagecoach Holdup scene. The cylinder pins are battered and there is moderate to heavy flash pitting on the percussion nipples. The engraving is crisp. The ivory grip has been broken, repaired and polished and is in good condition with several hairline cracks and some scattered age discoloration. This is a fine example of an early production, panel scene factory engraved, Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver.
