Gustave Dore - Newspaper Illustration Original Art (circa 1850). Add a bit of old world history to your comic art and illustration collection with this handsome pencil and sepia ink drawing by Gustave Dore. The most popular and successful French book illustrator of the mid 19th century, Dore (1832-83) is reknowned for his book illustrations for Dante's Inferno, Don Quixote, and the Bible. Dore's drawings often served as guides for engravers, and at one time, he employed more than forty blockcutters. Dore's drawings of London were sober studies of the poorer quarters of the city, and these works captured the attention of Vincent van Gogh. This lively drawing has an overall size of 5.75" x 9.5". It is believed that this piece was done for Journal pour Rire, which Dore did over 2,000 drawings for as a teenager in the 1840s-1850s. The paper shows signs of aging and has edge wear; otherwise, the art is in Very Good condition.
