ALS in German, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, March 31, 1896. Letter to an unidentified gentleman. In full (translated): “In polite response to your query of 3/30 I permit myself to reply to you that I am too far removed from the Berlin concert life, after all, to form an opinion about it. Also, for obvious reasons, it would not be without a humoristic touch if I, of all people, were to utter an opinion on this question. It would then be a reversal of the words of Pyrrhus: ‘A few more defeats like this and I win!’
I therefore ask you not to find me unobliging if I ask you for now to relieve me of this duty, with which I am honoured, and express the hope of being able to oblige you at a more convenient time.” Several creases, light overall wrinkling, and a small split along the edge of the central mailing fold, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an original pencil sketch of Mahler in profile by R. Collot, signed in pencil by the artist and dated 1938.
Mahler always kept his sense of humor with him, and that was a trait he likely needed during the intense two years he worked on his Symphony No. 3. About two weeks after writing this letter, Mahler premiered his lengthy work in Hamburg, after facing multiple blockades created by anti-Semitism in Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and Vienna, leading to the reluctance of the composer to utter an opinion on music in Berlin. Mahler tried to remove some of those obstacles himself the following year when he converted to Catholicism.
