Austrian composer (1860–1911) whose epic symphonies redefined the genre and assured him a place among the most important and influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Boldly penned ALS in German, signed “Mahler,” one page, 5.5 x 7, no date. Letter to musicologist Hugo Botstiber (1875-1941). Translated in part: “I shall be happy to be at your disposal and kindly request you to pay your call, if it suits you, at 3 PM of any day you like. However I beg you to contact me before by telephone in Döbling. To avoid that you get in circumstances that you couldn’t see me there. I will wait to answer the request of the President until I see you.” In fine condition, with a central horizontal fold, and a few stray ink marks to top border.

The famed conductor took over the Vienna Opera in 1897, leading the orchestra for a decade before moving to New York and conducting the Metropolitan Opera and the Philharmonic Society Orchestra (later the New York Philharmonic). A musical genius, Mahler also had a reputation as a tyrannical conductor. It would have been to Botstiber’s benefit, then, to make certain he was either prompt or reschedule his visit…lest he suffer Mahler’s wrath! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
