Gus Mager - Sherlocko the Monk Comic Strip Original Art (undated). Henpecko's pals stage a kidnapping so the poor feller can have a "boy's night out" -- unfortunately for him, Sherlocko and Watso are called in by his wife to crack the case. Gus Mager, a staff cartoonist with the Hearst organization, drew regular features for Hearst featuring funny folks caricatured as monkeys; they were usually named for their most prominent trait, such as "Braggo the Monk," "Rhymo the Monk," or "Tightwaddo the Monk." Mager's monks spawned a fad of using similar monk nick-names to rib real people, and it has been claimed the Marx Brothers, Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Zeppo, and Gummo, jumped in on Mager's act to acquire their monikers. The most famous of Mager's monk creations was "Sherlocko the Monk", with his assistant, "Watso." The two sleuths first appeared in December of 1910. Soon, Arthur Conan Doyle threatened legal action over the strip, and so, when Mager jumped ship to the rival Pulitzer newspapers, on February 23, 1913, he renamed the strip Hawkshaw the Detective. The image area of the superb strip measures 8.5" x 12", and the art is in Excellent condition. The decision to add this gem to your collection should be elementary, my dear Biddo! From the collection of Rudolph and John Dirks.
