Gun Crazy (United Artists, 1949). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Inspired by the real Bonnie and Clyde, and inspiring the Warren Beatty/Faye Dunaway film incarnations, Joseph H. Lewis directed this tale of lovers on the run, blasting their way across the country. The film was originally titled the noir-ish "Deadly Is the Female," but despite the presence of a femme fatale, the film looks little like the darker films of the decade. Lewis even employed some of the guerilla filmmaking of the 1960s and 1970s, including staging a bank heist in a real bank, with no one but those inside aware of the fiction. When a passerby outside screams about the bank robbery, the person had really assumed the worst. This artfully colored lobby card showcases the guns and girl of "Gun Crazy," each vital to the film's marketing. A crease mark and tape-repaired tear lie on the right side, but the card is otherwise clean. Fine+.
