Guerrero Standing Dignitary with Bird Headdress
Standing Dignitary with Bird-form Headdress
Guerrero
200 B.C. - A.D. 600
Green stone (serpentine?) with traces of red pigment, Weight 1.57 kg.
Height 14 1/2 in. Width 4 3/16 in.

The tall, frontally-viewed figure is shown with a trapezoidal face with flanges. Features are schematic. The combined size of the headdress with its opposing bird heads balances the facial area. The rectangular upper body terminates in clasped hands with the fingers delineated. His short, separated legs end in feet with visible toes.
As with so many of the stone figures from Guerrero this large example defies stylistic or cultural designation. The extraordinary range of parallel figures and masks found in the many cached deposits at the Aztec Templo Mayor may only serve to add complication, since they also have neither provenance nor chronological associations from their times and places of origin. The figure is in excellent condition, with some fine surface scratches.

Provenance
John-Platt Collection (Daniel M.
