Presented in this lot is an early Guan Yin or Kuan Yin Carved Nephrite Jade Figurine Statue, with grey and tawny inclusions. In Chinese mythology, Guan Yin (??) is the goddess of mercy and considered to be the physical embodiment of compassion. Nephrite is derived from lapis nephriticus, for the traditional belief in its power to heal the kidneys and loins. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including of Persian and Afghani artifacts.
