ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Westland Mansion letterhead, December 10, 1907. Cleveland writes to H. W. Bassey of Stuart, Florida. In part: “I write you to-day in regard to stopping with you awhile if you can give me and a trained woman nurse that I want to take with me if I go. It occurs to me now to ask you, in case you cannot accommodate us, to inquire at the hotel if you can secure adjoining rooms then.” He has added the postscript: “Of course I cannot say at this moment that I can positively go to Stuart but I hope to do so if I can be adequately provided for.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, short tears to upper and lower edges, and uniform toning. Matted with a portion of the original mailing and framed to an overall size of 13.5 x 22. President Cleveland had fallen seriously ill in the fall of 1907 and was presumably arranging the trip to Florida with his nurse for his health. Less than seven months later, on June 24, 1908, he suffered a heart attack and died.
