Manuscript LS as president, one page both sides, 10.5 x 14, April 10, 1893. Chief executive letter to Queen Victoria relaying President Cleveland's appointment of Thomas F. Bayard as "Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America." Crisply signed at the conclusion by Cleveland, and countersigned by Secretary of State Walter Q. Gresham. In fine condition. Bayard served as secretary of state during Cleveland's first presidential term and then, after several years in private life, assumed the role of United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom. His hope to further strengthen the bond between the two nations was quickly challenged with the Venezuelan crisis of 1895, a long-standing Guyana boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela that complicated Cleveland's desire to improve relations with the United States' southern neighbors.
